「パンク」って聞いたら何をイメージするだろうか。
革ジャン着て、髪をモヒカンにして、やんちゃ騒ぎするのがパンク？
世間一般のイメージはそんなもんでしょうか。
正直、パンクとはこうである！なんて偉そうなことは言えない。人によって解釈は様々だ。
私個人が考えるパンク – 周りに馴染むことが出来ずにいつもひとりぼっちで、劣等感を感じ、負け犬扱いされる。
パンクは、そんな社会からはみ出した奴等に手を差し伸べる音楽。
決して群れず、決して媚びず、精神を奮い立たせ、自分の居場所は自分で作ること。
筆者が影響を受けたパンク名盤の一部をご紹介します。

What do you imagine when you hear the word “punk”?
Is it punk to wear a leather jacket, wear your hair in a Mohawk, and make noise and have fun? That’s how the public image of punk music is.
To be honest, I can’t even define what a punk is. In fact, people have different interpretations.
My personal definition of a punk is, “music that reaches out to those on the people who feel marginalized in society, those who don’t fit in and are always left on their own, feeling inferior and treated as losers. Never crowd, never flirt, keep the spirit up, and make your own place in the world”.
Here are some of the punk classics that have influenced me as the writer of this recommendation.

「EVERYTHING SUCKS」
78年結成、今も現役で活動を続けているUS西海岸メロディック・パンクのレジェンド。DESCENDENTSはいわゆるオタク達が集まったバンドだ。バンドの象徴でもあるボーカルのマイロ・オーカーマンは、ヒョロヒョロでTシャツ短パンにメガネ姿。他のメンバーも一日中釣りにふけっているような男達。80年代、USパンクシーンがこぞって「ファック・レーガン！」と政権に対して猛反発している中、彼等はそんなポリティカルソングや社会に対しての批判に興味がなかった。もっと自分達に正直なことを歌う – 「女の子と釣りとコーヒーが大好きだ！」って。超高速メロディック・ハードコアパンクのサウンドに直球ラブソングを乗せて叫んでいた。個人的にも世界一敬愛しているバンドですがこのバンドへの愛情は底なし沼なので割愛。
Formed in 1978, the legendary US West Coast melodic punk band is still active today. Descendents is a band of nerdy members. The band’s iconic vocalist, Milo Aukerman, wears a T-shirt, shorts, and glasses. The other members of the group are men who indulge in fishing all day long. While the US punk scene was all “Fuck Ronald Reagan!” in the 80’s, they were not interested in such political songs or social criticism. They sang love songs over a super-fast Melodic Hardcore Punk sound. I personally adore this band the most in the world, my love for this band will never end.

「SUFFER」
79年ロサンゼルスで結成されたメロディック・パンクの祖。バンドは85年に一度解散するが、本作は88年の再結成で発表された代表作。生物学の博士号を持ちUCLA大学で講師も務める一面も持つボーカルのグレッグ・グラフィンが歌う、強烈な皮肉を交えて社会を批判した曲は、ポリティカルソングと一言では括り切れないほどだ。ディストーションの効きまくったギターとコーラスワークの完璧さは唯一無二。
The founder of Melodic Punk, formed in Los Angeles in 1979. The band broke up once in 1985, but this is their masterpiece, released at their reunion in 1988. The songs, which criticize society with irony, cannot be summed up in one word: political songs. The perfection of distorted guitar tones & the chorus work is the one and only.
OPERATION IVY
「ENERGY」
米バークレー ギルマンストリートに位置する924 Gilman Street (通称ギルマン) というライブスペースがある。そこでは GREEN DAY、RANCID、fifteen、JAWBREAKERなどのイーストベイパンクが盛り上がっていた。OPERATION IVYはギルマンで活躍していた伝説的スカパンク・バンドであり、RANCIDのティム・アームストロングとマット・フリーマンが在籍していた。本作にはGREEN DAYのライブでお馴染みの「ギター弾けるやつステージに上がってこい！」で演奏されるOperation Ivyの名曲カヴァー「Knowledge」を収録。あまりにも人気が出すぎてしまった為わずか3年でバンドは解散。
There is a music club called 924 Gilman Street (a.k.a. Gilman), located on Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. East Bay punks such as Green Day, Rancid, Fifteen, and Jawbreaker were thriving there. Operation Ivy was a legendary SKA PUNK band that played at Gilman and featured Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman of Rancid. This album includes “Knowledge” which is a classic cover of Operation Ivy, a well-known song when Green Day brings guitar players on stage for their live performances. The band broke up after only 3 years because they became too popular.

「WONDERS OF THE WORLD」
このバンド、SUBLIMEフリークなら必ず知っておきたい。パンクロック・レゲエ好きな方には説明不要だろうが、80年代カリフォルニア州ロングビーチにはSUBLIMEというバンドがいて絶大な人気を誇っていた。しかし、96年人気絶頂の中ボーカルのブラッドリー・ノウェルはヘロインの過剰摂取で亡くなってしまう。残されたメンバーのエリック・ウィルソンとバド・ゴーグが仲間達と結成したのがこのバンド。このアルバムに収録されているBLACK EYED PEASのwill i amがフィーチャリングで参加した名曲「sunny hours – 俺は大丈夫だ、全てうまくいく。お前も前向いて歩けよ」 は永遠のアンセム。
This band is a must know for any Sublime freak. As all punk rock reggae lovers know, there was a band called Sublime that was immensely popular in Long Beach, California in the 80’s. However, in 1996, at the peak of his popularity, vocalist Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose. The remaining members, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, formed this band with their friends. “Sunny Hours” featuring will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas on this album is a classic that all punk fans should know.

「ALT.MUSIC.HARDCORE」
80年結成ネバダ州リノ出身のUSハードコアバンド。ポジティヴ・ハードコアとも言われる前向きな姿勢の歌詞は、YOUTH OF TODAYを中心としたユースクルー・シーン (ストレート・エッジ系ハードコアのサブカルチャー) に多大な影響をもたらした。本作はバンド初期の82年から85年にかけてリリースされた3枚の貴重な7インチシングルを集めた編集盤。
US hardcore band from Reno, Nevada, formed in 1980. Known as “Positive hardcore,” its positive lyrics have had a a huge impact on the Youth Crew scene (a subculture of Straight Edge hardcore) as exemplified by Youth of Today. This is a compilation album of 3 rare 7-inch singles released between the band’s early days in 1982 and 1985.

80年代後半のニューヨーク・ハードコア・シーンのバンドにフォーカスしたコンピレーション。数々のストレートエッジ / ユースクルーのバンドをリリースした名門レーベルREVELATION RECORDSよりリリース。当時のユースクルー・シーンが学べる教科書的一枚。超クールなこのジャケットは、BAD BRAINS、Madball、H2Oなど数々のハードコアを撮影してきたフォトグラファーBJ PAPASが撮影。
Compilation focusing on bands from the New York Hardcore scene of the late 80’s. Released on Revelation Records, a prestigious label that has released numerous Straight Edge / Youth Crew bands. This is truly a textbook piece to learn about the Youth Crew scene of the time. This cool artwork was shot by BJ Papas, who has photographed numerous hardcore bands such as Bad Brains, Madball, H2O and many more.

「THE FEEDING OF THE 5000 (THE SECOND SITTING)」
「FIGHT WAR,NOT WARS – 戦争で戦うな、戦争と戦え – 」徹底的な無政府主義・DIYアティチュードを貫いたUKアナーコ・パンクCRASSのデビューアルバム。活動期間は短いものの、世界中に衝撃を与えた作品。メンバーによって自主制作されたこちらの再プレス盤には、初回オリジナル盤プレスではキリストを冒涜するという理由でプレス工場から収録を拒否された「Asylum」も収録されている。あまりにもキリストを冒涜しまくっている歌詞なのでそりゃ拒否されるわって内容である。
“FIGHT WAR, NOT WARS”. Debut album by UK Anarcho-punk CRASS, thoroughly in the spirit of anarchism and DIY attitude. Although active for only a short period of time, this is a work that has made an impact around the world. This re-press, produced independently by the members, also includes “Asylum,” which the pressing plant refused to include on the original pressing on the grounds that it would blaspheme Jesus Christ. The lyrics are so full of blasphemy against Christ that it is understandable that they are rejected.
POISON IDEA
「FEEL THE DARKNESS」
ポートランドが産んだキングス・オブ・パンク。彼等は当時のストレートエッジ精神 (ドラッグ・アルコールなどの快楽に手をださないこと) や、仲間同士で仲良くやろうぜみたいな馴れ合いに微塵も興味がなかった。身近で起きている警察による暴力・殺人や、邪魔をしてくるネオナチの連中に対して徹底的に批判し唾を吐く、己に正直なままの純度100%ハードコアパンク。ストレートエッジの思想を最初に提唱した MINOR THREAT / FUGAZIのイアン・マッカイをおちょくったジャケをリリースして当時物議を醸し出した。 (本人達いわくただのジョークらしいけど) メンバーの半分以上が巨体な為、別名「平均体重が世界で一番重いバンド」でもある。それでこそPOISON IDEA！
The Kings of Punk from Portland, Poison Idea. They were not interested in the Straight Edge mentality of the time (no drugs, alcohol, or other pleasures), nor were they interested in the “let’s get along with each other” type of socializing. It is 100% hardcore punk that remains honest to themselves, criticizing and spitting on the neo-Nazis, the police violence and murders that are happening around them. They said it was just a joke, but released with a controversial artwork that mocked Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat/Fugazi, who was the first to advocate the idea of Straight Edge. Since more than half of the members are huge, they are also known as “The band with the heaviest average weight in the world”. That’s what Poison Idea is all about!
SHAM 69
「ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES – THE BEST OF SHAM 69」
「ガキどもが団結すれば俺達は誰にも引き裂く事は出来ない。」76年イギリスサリー州ハーシャムで結成された永遠のワーキング・クラス・ヒーローSHAM69。パンクムーヴメントが起きていた当時の英国では、彼等は野蛮すぎると批判もされがちだったが、若者から人気を誇っていた。異なる思想のファンに支持されていた為、スキンズ vs パンクスの暴動がしょっちゅう起き、大体10・20分でライブが終了してしまった。屈指の名曲「If the Kids Are United」は、VO.ジミー・パーシーがファンに向けて争いを辞めろと訴えかける為に作られた曲だが、残念ながらその後も暴動は起き続けバンドは79年に解散した。
“If the kids are united then we’ll never be divided”. Working class hero Sham 69 was formed in Hersham, Surrey, England in 1976. In the United Kingdom at the time of the punk movement, they were often criticized as too barbaric, but they were popular among young people. Because of the different philosophies espoused by the fans, riots between SKINS and PUNKS occurred frequently, and the show usually ended after 10 or 20 minutes. One of the their best songs, “If the Kids Are United,” was written by vocalist Jimmy Pursey to appeal to fans to quit fighting, but unfortunately, the riots continued and the band broke up in 1979.
